Development Squad

An exciting but entirely optional initiative for those ‘pre - race team’ riders who are ready to step up from Academy level and develop a rounded skill set ready for racing later in life.

In the UK, national level racing in all disciplines generally starts at under 14 level. Prior to that, there is a full calendar of fantastic and highly competitive racing in under 12 categories, however we feel that riders in this age group should not have the perception of pressure that could come from being on a team that is racing on a national stage. Likewise, less experienced first year under 14 riders may not feel ready to step up to a national standard and instead want to continue to hone their skills in regional racing. Still, many of our young riders who love the thrill and challenge of racing and training said to us that they wanted to do so as part of their own team set up and so we proudly give you, The Development Squad!

This initiative has been conceived to help those ‘pre-team’ riders build their skill set, experience, and relationships with each other in a squad environment. Riders at this level will typically train on circuit and off road with our older race team, and enjoy all the benefits of a dedicated race coaching set up with our top coaches. Where the race team may also train on the open road, the Development Squad will only undertake race coaching on closed circuit and off road environments. Emphasis is still absolutely on fun and bonding with their squad mates - forging friendships and skills that will last a lifetime!

When the time comes, riders, parents and coaches can discuss and agree graduation from the Development Squad to the Race Team, where our racers will be supported to achieve their goals among the top level in the UK.

Development Squad

Exciting Announcement

We welcome 5 new recruits to the Development Squad,

(From the left) Leo, Alexander, Henry, Elwood and Rory.

These 5 kids have grown so much during 2024 in their skills sessions, racing and how much they just love riding !

The Development Squad section of the club isn't results focused, we still adopt the same philosophy of cycling is fun and racing can be too.

The DS is for children keen to race and wanting to get a little more race experience. As they grow we'll grow with them getting them ready for National level events, should they wish to continue down that path, or continuing to support them at a local level.

Development Squad

Bridging the gap between Academy and Race Team

Here they are ! The 1st riders into the new Magicshine UK development squad section of the club.

Charlie, Oscar, Boaz, Brody, Zac, and Aaron, these fantastic six children, get to train with club coach and local and UK legend Chris Opie on Thursday nights with the youth race team.

The development squad bridges the gap between the academy level and the race team of the club, allowing the children who are dedicated to racing and the club to progress further and gain more racing experience.

We would love to continue to grow the development squad and to represent all genders, so if you think you'd like to become part of Wheal Velocity then give us a shout.

Development Squad

Exciting news,

With the growth of the club in new members and the MTB side now in it's 2nd year period, we have seen an increase in children racing multi disciplines regularly.

Some of these children have asked how they join the race team, well the answer to that is to be at national level age. (U14 upwards)

This got us thinking and we created the Development Squad (DS), a sector of the club that will coach seasoned racers with the transition from U10 - U14 race team, the DS children will be invited by a coach to attend the Thursday night race training sessions coached by ex Pro rider Chris Opie and highly experienced club coaches Tony, Jon and Mark.

Magicshine UK have jumped on board with the club and sponsored this new adventure for the club and children ensuring we can continue putting funds into getting children racing.

This also gives a clear pathway through the club from Academy level to Development Squad then onto the race team.
