The Wheal Velocity families were out in force at Escot.
Escot is such a lovely venue with Exeter Wheelers, the hosts, real going for it with the festival atmosphere.
As always the kids and youth racing are of first and despite their very early trip up the A30 everyone was on good form.
Highlights were Leo on his, new to him, cross bike and Elwood's determination. He is now making a training plan "to keep his breath".
We were all holding our breath for Oliver in the 14/16's race. Oliver lead the whole way but just got piped at the post.
The senior and V40 race had Coach Stu, Craig & Simon struggling for breath too as Robin showed us how it should be done.
With only 3 rounds to go and regional champs as round 7 on the 24th, its all still to play for.

Storm Ashleigh Adds to the Challenge at Round 4 of the Southwest Cyclocross League
On Sunday, October 20th, the Southwest Cyclocross League returned to Cornwall for Round 4, held at the Royal Cornwall Showground in Wadebridge. Despite Storm Ashleigh’s gusting winds and heavy rain, the riders embraced the tough conditions, making for an exciting day of racing across all categories.
The day began with the under 8’s, where eight young riders battled not only each other but also the relentless weather in a 15-minute race. Madeleine NORTH emerged victorious in the girls’ category, while Risu WIKELEY (Exeter Eagles BMX Racing Club) took first place for the boys.
Race 2 saw the under 10 and under 12 categories hit the increasingly muddy course, with 32 riders navigating a series of slips and slides. Indie SKINNER (Dartmoor Velo) took the win in the under 10 girls’ race, while Oscar RICHES (Wheal Velocity) triumphed for the boys. Bryony MEDLAND (Dartmoor Velo) claimed victory in the under 12 girls’ race, and Charlie DAY (Dartmoor Velo) won the boys' race.
The rain lifted just in time for the Youth race, which featured 18 riders in the under 14 and under 16 categories. James ALLEN (Mid Devon CC) won the under 14 race, with Orla WHITE taking the top spot in the under 16 girls’ category, and Freddie DAY (Dartmoor Velo) winning the open under 16 race.
The course was fully opened up for the next two races, which featured technical challenges such as a spiral section where riders cycled into the center before reversing direction to spiral back out—a crowd-pleasing feature that gave everyone a glimpse of the competition. With sweeping corners and a variety of slow technical sections, it was a true test of bike handling. The largest field of the day saw 56 riders take on the full course in gusty winds. Among the many category winners were Lara DIX (Mid Devon CC) for junior female, Hannah BAYES (St Piran WRT) for senior female, Tracey CORCORAN (Plymouth Corinthian CC) for female vet 40, Lisa MARTIN (05/03) for female vet 50, Louise CROSSMAN for female vet 60, and Helen MCGINNES (Widger Spoke Easies) for female novice. Lachlan MACLENNAN (Wadebridge Coasters Cycling Club) won the open junior category, James BOVEY (Mid Devon CC) took the open vet 50, Nick PERCIVAL won open vet 60, Peter STAGG won open vet 70, and Oliver NORTH took the open novice win. James BOVEY also clocked the fastest lap in this race, completing it in 9 minutes and 8 seconds.
The final race of the day featured 38 riders in the open senior and open vet 40 categories. With the wind drying out parts of the track, conditions were different from the earlier races. Lee ADAMS (Tavistock Wheelers Cycling Club) took first place in the open senior race, while Benjamin CAUSON (Plymouth Corinthian CC) won the open vet 40. Travis BRAMLEY (Plymouth Corinthian CC) set the fastest lap of the day with an impressive time of 8 minutes and 16 seconds.
Well done to all the riders who braved the stormy conditions, and many thanks to the organizers and volunteers who made the event possible. The next round of the league will take place in Newnham, Plymouth, on November 3rd, with cyclocross returning to Cornwall in 2025!

I think it would be fair to say that the trip to Coxleigh Barton was with some intrepidation. Last year the long grass made for some race effecting tech issues which, due to the smaller wheels, effected the younger riders to a greater extent.
Credit to the Coxleigh Barton team, they reacted to the feedback. Volunteers were sporting blistered hands from many an hour of grass racking. The effort was worth it and the weather was kind to help produce some blistering races.
A great turn out for the Wheal Velocity team with Academy, Development squad, Race team and adult riders all giving it a go.

Mud and Glory at the 2nd Round of the South West Cyclocross League
This past Sunday, October 6th, Cornwall Cyclocross hosted the thrilling second round of the South West Cyclocross League at Redruth School. With its reputation as the "Best Course of 2024," Redruth once again proved why it's so highly regarded. Set within the school's grounds, the course featured a combination of sharp turns, off-camber corners, short steep descents, challenging steps, and climbs designed to test both the technical and physical limits of riders of all abilities.
Despite torrential rain turning the course into a veritable mud bath, 152 riders from across the South West came to test their mettle. The weather only added to the challenge, making bike handling a key skill as racers battled not only each other but also the elements. With heavy rain falling throughout the day, the track conditions were as tough as they come—ideal for cyclocross.
And ideal for Wheal Velocity riders.

Lauren Fox takes the win at the first round of the National Trophy!
We all know that #CrossIsBoss but Lauren shows that when it comes to national level CX events she is the boss.
Although Lauren rides for MDCC she is from Cornwall and is a 2nd claim club member at Wheal Velocity. Lauren regularly attends our Thursday night race training and is a fantastic role model for Cornish youth racing.
Well done Lauren and good luck at the next round.
If you’ve been anywhere around Wheal Velocity for the past few weeks, you may have heard a certain buzz that #crossiscoming and some speculation that indeed #crossisboss
Well finally #crossishere and an intrepid bunch of Wheal Velocity riders made the journey to Cricket St. Thomas where our excellent friends, the 1st Chard Wheelers were ready to welcome us to the opening round of the South West Cyclocross League. Tristan and his team always put on a spectacular event and this year was no different with a super fun new layout that really made the most of the beautiful venue and topography on offer!
First up was Mia, 6th in U8G who continues to wow us all with her determination and amazing progress in every race.
Next up in U10 we had both Elwood and Oscar making their debut in the age group, with Elwood in p5 and Oscar taking a brilliant win!
U12s raced in the same race albeit they were set off a little bit before the younger riders. Brody making his debut, scored an amazing 3rd place in his first ever U12 race, and Charlie who broke away early with the leader, managed to ride it home for 2nd.
Next up the U14/U16 race where Lucas really impressed everyone with his strength on the climbs to take 3rd U14 and big brother Oliver scored a brilliant 2nd place U16.
Next race up saw Juniors and women racing together. By this time the wind had really got up to make some of the turns extra spicy! Tom was our sole junior and rode like he’s never been away to take the win. We also had the chance to return the cheers for our brilliant club secretary Jeannie, who works tirelessly for the good of the club week in week out. Jeannie has challenged herself to ride the league this year and kicked things off with 7th place! Not bad for someone who’s only just learning to ride and proving once and for all that cross is the most inclusive and accessible form of bike racing there is!
Finally the Senior and Veteran men were let loose on the course. We had our Coaches Si (9th place Vet) and Craig (19th place Vet) racing in this - also an honourable mention for Club Dad Robin (6th place Vet) riding for Duchy Velo.
Honourable mentions also for our sister club War Vena, fielding the absolutely fabulous Grace (5th Senior Female) & Dad Steve (7th Vet 60 male) along with Rich (4th Vet 60 male).
Final honourable mentions for our 2nd claim members who often train with us when they can. Sam and Bryony who race for Dartmoor Velo and both won their categories, and the awesome Tom, who races for Mud Dock racing and who had a great ride for 6th senior male.
We are super proud of everyone today and look forward to hosting the next round, next week at Redruth School. Coaching from 1 on Saturday, race registration from 08:45 on Sunday. Let’s hope we can see more of our fantastic bunch representing the WV family.

Will we do that again? Yes we will!!!
The 1st September was our first go at short track MTB racing. It turned out to be a great day.
Each age category had 3 times 20min races spaced through the day to allow recovery between each race. The finish position for each race received points. The total points for all 3 races decided the winner.
Was a 3 x 20mins at full effort going to be to much for little legs? Well it turned out that big legs were struggling more! Our younger riders just got faster and faster each race.
The fact that races got to give it another go really was the best thing about this format. Both first time races and old hands really enjoyed the learning aspect race on race. It was also a joy to see confidence levels rise in our Academy riders. If that's not enough it was great from a spectators point of view
Check out the photos to see young and old having a total blast.

It’s the 2024 School Games finals this week (last week of August 2024) and Jed and Naomi from Wheal Velocity qualified to represent the South West! Congratulations, what an achievement!
Sadly Naomi is unable to compete in the Modern Pentathlon due to her recent accident but has gone to support and cheer on her fellow teammates.
Jed is competing in the Velodrome (nominated for the sprints) with Edward, Bayley and Jacob from MDCC. What an experience! Considering we don’t have a velodrome in the SW this really is quite something! Well done! (You can watch live on YouTube: school games day 2 cycling and they’re on at 32.20)

Here at Wheal Velocity we’re very proud of you both
Its hard to pin point the exact ingredients that make a great event. Great people and a great course gave us a very good head start.
Although the U8, U10 & U14 races were a bit in the mist with a little bit of drizzle it did not detract for the action. With an absolute ton of young people taking part. It was also really nice to see so many of our academy riders giving it a go.
As can be seen from all the photos linked below the sun came out in the afternoon and made for a lovely afternoon of racing.
The track, built under instruction of our off road coaches, was warmly welcomed. The big news is they are not stopping. Coaching feathers, short track and more line chooses are already underway or in the planning stage.
See you all again soon for more MTB!

Yes ! What a successful Saturday we had,
Aimed at introducing people to the world of cycling and racing, families came in force to Wheal Velocity.
Many became new members after having enjoyed it so much and seeing all of the facilities we now have. On-site off and on road race tracks and training facility. All of which are traffic free!
Kids had an amazing life experience of being coached by former pro Chris Opie, the event was also supported by @ampedcycles and @trekbikes_uk , @magicshine_uk came with some amazing deals to support and Kernow Physio shared over 20 years worth of experience in physio, bike fitting and national level racing.
Despite the unpredictable weather there was smiles all day!

What an amazing weekend was had by Wheal Velocity and family.
The club provided transport, camping and race entry fees for 12 riders to go the Newnham 3six12 MTB event. For some riders this was the first ever experience of XC racing.
We are all so proud of every rider that took part.
In the kids race, on Friday, Elwood took his 1st ever win and Mia claimed a second spot despite a crash!
Brody and Charlie won their categories and all the development squad took a top 5 wash out with all 5 riders including Boaz, Zach and Aaron finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th!
Jowan paired up with legend Chris Opie and won their category and claiming 7th overall in the 6 hour rankings.
Kev, Tom , Craig and Stu smashed the 12 hour team race finishing 9th in category and 18th overall from 72 teams.
The collaboration between our club and War Vena Racing Team ,to bring off-roading to Wheal Velocity, is working fantastically.
The club, thanks to our supporters and volunteers, is fortunate be able to offer this opportunity to our youth riders. Thank you.
Months of paper work and preparation, weeks of course building, days of course set up.....was it worth it?
Yes it was!
June 30th saw the 2nd ever MTB XCO race held at Wheal Velocity. With feedback and lessons leant from our first event held last year, riders and volunteers reported a much improved experience.
For the under 8's and 12's we had a cracking little course with some nice features to test their skills but not detract new comers.

The Juveniles upwards raced the full course which was fast but mixed with some interesting technical sections.
In fact it had it all, river crossing, single track, drop offs and fast down hills to massive burm sections.

Amazing ride by these two club legends! Proving our junior & adult section credentials are legit with an awesome ultra effort at the weekend’s Tour de Kernow organised by Jon Butt & Penzance Wheelers, Kevin Treloar and Simon Dodd rode in together as 3rd & 4th riders in!!!
Well done guys, leading by example.
Comment by Simon,
"Well...legends might be a bit far, talking of a bit far 300k in Cornwall was right up there. Brutal even. I have done a few long distance events in Scotland and further north in England but Cornwall offers something a bit special at this distance. On one hand you are treated to some amazing views, the sunrise over St Ives was stunning, on the other hand your rhythm and spirit is crushed by the endless short sharp hills. Jon Butt set a great course and was able to limit the damage with some inspired route choice but even so I would call this the hardest 300 I have done in the UK.
Luckily I had some amazing company with Kevin grinding out the miles between cake stops. He even managed a time trial effort down Ladock valley with around 270k fatigue in the legs. I hung on and due to having the map I was not dropped :)
We both used our race training to jump some wheels and get a good pull down to Land's End from the off. The guys coming in at 13 hours and, I guess at, 14 hours were to hot to handle (not that it was a race) so Kevin and I back it off a bit to get in to the finish at around 15 hours.
I would also like to mention Giant Helston. We stop of on route as a required check point, I took the opportunity to give my chain a bit of love. As I was wearing my Wheal Velocity top they applied a discount, that's right, WV members get a discount on selected items!!!! Get on. "
Three of our younger racers day started at 04:00 today! (23rd June) Leaving Mid Cornwall for Wales to race the Welsh XC Rd4.
They all rode fantastic and represented the club so well showing determination and the willingness to never give up.
Results are to be confirmed but we believe Brody and Charlie both secured a 7th place in fields of 40 riders!
Little Elwood we are unsure of finishing result just yet, but we are so proud of them all, well done you superstars.
Exciting news,
With the growth of the club in new members and the MTB side now in it's 2nd year period, we have seen an increase in children racing multi disciplines regularly.
Some of these children have asked how they join the race team, well the answer to that is to be at national level age. (U14 upwards)
This got us thinking and we created the Development Squad (DS), a sector of the club that will coach seasoned racers with the transition from U10 - U14 race team, the DS children will be invited by a coach to attend the Thursday night race training sessions coached by ex Pro rider Chris Oppie and highly experienced club coaches Tony, Jon and Mark.
Magicshine UK have jumped on board with the club and sponsored this new adventure for the club and children ensuring we can continue putting funds into getting children racing.
This also gives a clear pathway through the club from Academy level to Development Squad then onto the race team.
Check out this very cool drone footage from the cat 2/3/4 and 14/16 races (courtesy of the owner of Wheal Jane)
“It was great to attend the Wheal Jane Classic at the weekend. We had lots of conversations around local routes, cycling as a form of transport as well as free cycle security marking.
Seeing just how many children and young people were enjoying the sport of cycling was fantastic.
The School Games element of the day was very fun and engaging for children of all ages and abilities and helping develop their bike handling skills as well as form new friendships.
The racing action was both fast and exciting, while also being very inclusive and fun.
A big hats off to the organisers for managing this tricky task. Overall, the weekend was a huge success, and it was clear from chatting to families that having the closed track facility at Wheal Jane was a real draw for them and a huge asset in terms of getting them out on the bikes as a family. Well done to everyone who took part!”

Round 5 of the Cornish cup (2nd June) was also the South West District championships for 10 mile time trial.
Once more to the S6/10...but no! A last minute course change, due to traffic light just before Ladock, changed us to the S56/10. Basically start in Ladock and carry on until past the first roundabout then around the second roundabout and back down. I could tell you about the road surface or the excitement at taking on the midway roundabout at full speed but at the end of the day its just you and your bike. That's the best bit about TT's

Wheal Velocity youth riders achieve success in Devon!
The club were proud to see plenty of our young road racers from across the age groups take to the start lines for the 2 stage Colin Lewis Grand Prix, organised by the fantastic team at Mid Devon Cycling Club over the Bank Holiday weekend.
First up was the incredibly challenging Oddicombe Hill Climb stage, where U8 and U10 took part in mass start racing from strategic points on the hill, and U12 upwards took on the full challenge of the fearsome Oddicombe Hill. 0.7km of double digit, hairpin laden climbing.
In U8 we had Oscar getting away with the overall winner and taking a very strong 2nd, Tristan and Elwood both doing their very best work to finish in the middle of the bunch and Freya taking 3rd girl. In U10 Phoebe took a tumble but bravely finished to ensure the points came rolling in!
In U12 the riders adopted full TT style start protocols and rode individual efforts with Charlie taking 2nd by 2 seconds and Zach 5th another 8 seconds back – incredible racing from the WV Magicshine Development Squad Boys!
Next up the WV Fibrefusion Racing Team riders took to the line where U14 Boys Lucas and Jowan put in fantastic rides to take 4th and 7th respectively, Naomi took the maximum points for U14 girls.
U16s and Jed took third, a tight margin again, by 2 seconds. Oliver took 4th a further 2 seconds back – both incredible strong rides by the boys. Megan smashed it in her first ever competitive road bike event with second place and a very strong time in U16 girls.
A quick trip back to the Velopark followed for the Criterium Stage and the overall. In U8 again, we had a great ride from Oscar who took a solo second and Tristan 4th with a very strong ride. Elwood rode over the line in style with his typical grin, waving his broken arm in the air! No stopping a good man… Freya took 3rd girl again with a good strong ride in windy conditions.
U10 and Phoebe had a very good race, keeping her head down into the wind in a fab aero position on the bike (some coaching from TT Champion Dad we think!) taking the win for maximum points.
U12 Next where the WV Magicshine Development Squad boys Charlie and Zach raced out of their skins to take 2nd and 3rd. This makes sure the boys stay 1st and 2nd overall in the SW Youth Series Standings too.
U14 Boys WV Fibrefusion Racing Team up next where Jowan raced brilliantly for 4th and Lucas holding his own in his first year and taking 6th spot, Naomi riding strongly and taking the win in U14 girls.
U16 boys and Jed got in a move at the start that stayed away and helped him seal 2nd place, Oliver came in strong to pick 4th spot and Megan absolutely smashing her first Criterium race to take 2nd U16 Girl.
All in all a massive day for the club and huge thanks to MDCC for a wonderful day of competitive cycling!
Grammarcombe woods on the outskirts of Exeter played host to round 3 of the SWXC.
The stakes were made higher by the fact that this event would also be the regional championships.
<Side note: You can only become the regional champion is you live within the region. You can win this event to become the regional champion but someone else could become the league champion. The league would be the person with the best results over all 5 rounds, 4 to count.>
It also happens to be the last time Grammarcombe will be used in its current form as forestry work starts soon. Plus, to amp up the hype, the sun was out and conditions were dry.
As is always the way with cycling events the kids are of first. Hats of to all the mum's and dads driving up the A30 at silly o'clock on a Sunday morning. The course was made harder for the kids this time around with the addition of a tabletop and other technical features. The fortnightly MTB training at Wheal Jane really is showing that it's time well spent as team WV hoovered up the terrain.
Wheal Velocity is well represent in the younger age categories but we could do with more youth riders in the older categories. Join us.
(Mia, Under 8's Female, 4th
Brody, Under 10's male, 1st
Charlie, Under 12's male, 3rd
Zachary, Under 12's male, 5th)
Talking of older it was the turn of the juniors and adults to round of the day. With a mass start with riders ranging from youth to super vet, female and male alike, it was a full on experience trying to pick your way through the field.
Stuart, Sport Open, 13th
Craig, Vet Open, 14th
Simon, Vet Open, DNF (Sad face, but that's racing)
As always, regardless of result, everyone had a great time. Hard not to when the sun is out and your on your bike.
Does this sound like your kind of thing.....well round 4 is hosted by us.

Wheal Velocity were proud to host the 4th round of the Cornish Cup.
The Cornish Cup is a season long cycling time trial series, participants have to be 12 years or over to take part, where points are allocated and aggerated over the season.
The series comprises of 10 time trial events over the 2024 season. These chosen events will be allocated Cornish Cup status. Two competitions run side by side, one for solo riders, the other for clubs/teams.
Points are gained at each event – 100 points for fastest in each category, Men, Women, Junior then 99 for 2nd fastest, 98 for 3rd fastest and so on down to 1 point.
The overall winner of each category will be the person, in each category, that accumulates the largest score from 6 events over the series.
Team prize at the end of the season will be calculated by taking the 3 highest scores from each club (from any category) from each of the 10 events – the winning team will be the one with the most points.
You do not need to ride all 10 events you will still be included in the overall points score.

Another Sunday, another go at the classic S6/10.
For those who are not familiar with the delights of the S6/10, it's a code given to the 10 mile time trial on the road out of Ladock. Basically 5 miles to a roundabout and 5 miles back as fast as your little legs and chosen steed will take you. We you read that back it sound rubbish but it is in fact super good fun.
The event was hosted by Kernow Racing Team and Wheal Velocity riders were well represented.

If you fancy a go there are loads of Cornish Cup events to come. Check out the Calendar page.
With a few days to reflex and recover from Woody's MTB XCO its still hard to pin point what made/makes this such a great event. Its got that home event feel with both Woody's and WarVena encouraging Cornish riders across all age ranges. Its got a welcoming and down to earth feel about the café and organizers. Most of all its got the right mix of fun challenging/technical down hill and lung busting up hill sections. Its no wonder the a national XCO round is coming to Woody's in June.
The above mentioned factors makes you want to raise your game. You can't help but get drawn in to pushing a bit harder on that down hill section. Our younger rides relished the opportunity to let rip.
All the Wheal Velocity riders had a great time with good solid results from all. It terms of stand out performance on the day its got to be hats of to both Brody and Charlie. Some solid bike handling skills mixed with determination yielded ace results. Mia and Elwood were steady away and both looking like their were enjoying themselves, those lumps and jumps are massive when you only have little legs. Adults!? We all agreed it was a lot of fun but I think Stuart looked to be in control of his bike more often then Craig and myself. Well we best get working on our skills for the next event!
Remember to check out the calendar page to find MTB sessions for both youth academy on every other Saturday and adults on every other Thursday night.
Next is South West XC Series 2024 Round 3 & Regional Champs, Grammarcombe Woods, Devon. On the 19th of May
Mia. 4th
Elwood. 12th
Brody. 1st
Charlie, 3rd
Stuart, 8th
Simon, 10th
Craig, 17th
You only have to look at the pictures of the racing to see that Wheal Velocity Bike Club is doing something right.
Bring together the right combination of competitive sprit, willingness to give it a go and a ton of keen volunteers and the result is a positive for all. Yes the new race schedule helped and lets be honest the sunshine makes for happy spectators and visiting riders.
Its a great opportunity for everyone to gain some racing experience, which is hard to get without traveling out of Cornwall. We all know there is no magic short cut, the more you do the better you get, that could be dealing with nerves, getting your race tactics dilled in or just enjoying riding your bike and letting the results sort themselves out.
Amazing to see such a wide range of abilities, from riders entering their first race, experienced riders in the under 14's/under 16's honing their skills to elite riders giving racing tips to cat 1's
As always a massive thank you to all the volunteers, these events have to be set in motion a long way in advance. This organizational time is freely given by the few for the enjoyment of the many. Thank you.
Wheal Velocity Cycling Club saw the launch of their 2024 Youth Racing Team on Wed 3rd April at Macdonalds Farm near Padstow.
This years team of Under 16 and Under 14 riders will be racing National and regional circuit races through the summer including The Youth British Championships at Cyclopark in July and the Hog Hill GP in Redbridge this month.
The Team would like to say a big thank you to all their supporters and sponsors including,
FibreFusion, Wheal Jane Enterprise Park, Macdonalds Farm, Duchy Lettings, MY Motors, Redruth Charity Trust, Giant Helston and Clive Mitchell Cycles.
A special thank you to all the volunteers that work behind the scenes at Wheal Velocity Cycling Club.
The Team had a big weekend over Easter with both the Castle Come Easter Classic and the Ride Flux GP at Pembrey Circuit.
Weather conditions were particularly challenging on Easter Friday at Castle Combe but all the WV riders rode well.
A big up to Charlie Robinson for getting in a one man breakaway in the Open U12 race and a massive shout out to Naomi Hawkins who crashed in a last lap pile up going for the sprint!
The day finished with the U16 Open race. Jed Claxton went off the front with 2 laps to go and held on for the win, great effort Jed!
The 24th March at 08:00 was the time and date for my first every time trial (Simon 43 :) ).
I'll be honest my expectation was of funny bikes and even funnier shaped helmets. The Cornish Cup and the organization of the event was a breath of fresh air. Yes there were riders taking it to a very high level of performance but there was also a very good mix across abilities and gender taking part as well. Great to see so many riders with so many different levels giving it a go. A very welcoming and positive experience plus the cake afterwards made up for any energy loss.
The Wheal Velocity team had a good showing which also added to the positive vibes.

Sunday 17th March was the first round of the youth series, and it was actually sunny! Much better than the hail we had last year for it. The South West Road Group have been really keen to support grass roots racing in the region and kindly agreed to use some funds to support youth races at Westpoint, which although fantastic, is expensive to use. It’s extremely important that the youth riders get to race on different circuits over the course of the year and so this is a great investment in the future of our sport.
This event saw many of our younger riders really show dominance in a good field of young racers. The day began with the under 8's race, this was the only age group with only one race, but it was a 20 minute race rather than the normal 15 minutes this age group is used to. Wheal Velocity rider Tristan had a cracking race where he lapped the field twice before taking the win. He is definitely ready to move up to under 10's next year! Next Wheal Velocity rider Elwood really got into the flow of using his clip in shoes properly and came in for a brilliant 2nd place. One of our youngest riders Freya, loved racing round and kept going right until the end giving us a 3rd in the under 8 girls.
For our under 10's and 12's there were 2,15 minute races where points were awarded to give overall positions for the day. Leo took part in his first road race ever in the under 10's group and he showed excellent perseverance to keep going and finish both races in style. Our under 12's showed a club head to head with Charlie and Zach making an exciting race to watch. Both had brilliant starts, with Charlie pushing forward into first off the line. Both boys were quite far ahead of the rest of the field in both races, and were so quick the commissaire missed them both times on the lap that was supposed to be 3 to go, meaning an extra lap was done on each race! Charlie took first on both races with Zach taking 2nd on both races too. This meant a 1, 2 position for the stage race for Wheal Velocity.
In the under 14/16's race there was one 40 min race and one 20 min race. We had Jowan taking part in the under 14's race as the only Wheal Velocity rider in this race. Jowan did a fantastic job of staying in the bunch throughout both races in what was a very strong field. He took 3rd overall for Wheal Velocity.
The day really showed the friendships that are made in the club, with everyone cheering the other riders on when they weren't racing themselves and fun in between races, with lots of adult reminders to fuel before your next race! Such a brilliant start to the youth series with Wheal Velocity riders in the top 3 throughout the age groups and lots of people showing great promise for the series ahead.
Grammercombe woods, just on the outskirts of Exeter, played host to the first round of the cross country MTB league.
With majority pine trees the morning sunshine dappled the woodland floor. Pine needles and moss gave way to a dry and flowing single track.
As the youth racing kicked off no one was looking at the trees!
Our under 8's did well with Mia coming 6th and Elwood picking up a 4th.
Brody back from fighting dragons put in another solid performance filling the 2nd step of the podium in the under 10's.
Charlie and new racer Zach handled the course well and came home with a 4th and 7th place finish in the under 12's.
Both Charlie and Brody felt a little hard done by as they were both, separately, involved in a little bit of elbows out racing. No one is suggesting wrong doing and it is all part of racing but you do feel for them as there is less time in the youth racing to recover from these events.
Extra mention to Zach as this was his first race. He did really well even with a slight tech issue mid race. We are looking forward to seeing more racing for Zach. All the winter training is paying off. Well done Zach.
On to the older riders and you just can't make this stuff up. About 10 min to race time and the heavens opened. The 90 ish riders were not deterred by a the weather. Little did they know that it was going to be a mud fest once the hour thirty minutes were done.
Juniors were of first and Tom was in the mix. Great to see Tom back but despite a good start the bike gods did not favor him and a flat back tyre forced a DNF.
I will be honest and say I am still getting my head around the MTB gridding system so I am not sure if Stuart, our MTB coach, went in Sport, Expert or Elite but he came 8th.
Craig and I had a good time in the Vets to round out the Wheal Velocity/War Vena team.
Craig came in 20th and I (Simon) scored a surprise 8th place.
We all agreed that we can't wait to get invoiced with round 2 which is at Woody's Bike Park.
Big day on the road today for myself and Brody as we made the trip upto snowy Wales for the 1st round of the Welsh mtb season with some friends from the sw.
Travelling that far for a race can be a gamble if it all goes wrong, but it definitely didn't..
The ground with all the recent rain made it very muddy and we had to wash the bike after practice session !
Brody had his biggest ever field with 27 boys ! So this would make for great racing experience and with some very fast competition!
Whistle went, he had a good start and wasn't to far off the front group, his bike handling skills really paid off today riding sections lots couldn't... he brought home a solid 4th, an unreachable gap to the top 3 but a big gap to 5th, a solid race with lots of experience gained.
Well Done to all the riders who braved a soggy and grey February morning to travel to the Velopark for the season opener on Valentines Day.
A fabulous day of multi-stage racing was put on by Rob and Andy from MDCC that saw plenty of WVCC riders taking to the circuit for the first time this year.
The day started with U16/U14 Prologue time trials where our very own Jed took joint first place and brothers Oliver & Lucas each posted extremely competitive times that indicated how much work both have put in over the winter. Aria gave an equally good account of herself in the competitive girls category once again showing the hard work that she has put in over the winter.
Next up was the ultra competitive under 12 under 10 category where Brody raced on the road for the first time in his career, and Charlie made the difficult step up to under Twelves. Both boys did us proud with Charlie winning his category by going under 3 minutes and Brody riding a super TT to go a second off 3rd place!
Last but not least for stage one, was the ever fabulous under eight category where we had Oscar, Tristan and Elwood representing us. All boys once again made us super proud with a 1, 2, 3 in that order!
Next for the second stages was the serious business of crit racing. First up was the under 16 under 14 short race with Jed narrowly missing the intermediate sprint and final victory. Once again Oliver and Lucas proved super strong in their categories and Aria equally great in the girls.
The under Twelves, and under tens, took to the circuit for the next race, where Charlie got away solo from the start and TT’d himself to victory! Brody again showed his class and even in his first road race ever, showed his ultra competitive instinct to stick in the bunch comfortably.
Oscar rode a dominant race in the under 8 category, racing to victory in style with Tristan showing just what a fabulous rider he is to take second place and Elwood enjoying third place to seal the 1,2,3 for WVCC!
Last up were the under 16 and under 14 stage three race. This time a longer 40 minute race. Right from the start, a small group broke away that included Jed and Oliver. The lead group stayed away for the whole race, showing some incredibly strong riding at this early stage in the season. Once again, Jed narrowly missed victory in the sprint and Oliver came in fourth. Lucas also settled into a bunch and rode superbly well in challenging conditions to seal third place overall in his category - a fantastic effort from him.
Overall, podiums for the day included Jed in second place under 16, Lucas in third place. Under 14, Charlie, winning the under 12 category, Oscar winning the under eight category with Tristan in second, and Elwood in third overall. The rest of the team were literally seconds off podium places showing just what a super bunch they are. Well done to all riders and thank you to MDCC for a fantastic season opener!
PLEASE NOTE : after yesterday's (10th Feb 2024) club AGM meeting we discussed the coaching format, with an uptake in attendance of sometimes up to 30 riders which is absolutely fantastic ! So please keep it up, the younger children can find the 2 hour session with a midway break to be long and the advanced riders don't always get the level of coaching they require due to vast range in children and abilities we now have.
We have decided to split the sessions to allow us to give the children the attention, quality and time we feel they deserve, allowing us to focus more on that groups ability to help them progress further.
From next week the format will be :
Advanced riders 13:30 - 14:30
Beginners/improvers 15:00 - 16:00
The reason for advanced riders going first is it will allow them to cross over with the older race team training session, so they can see what the potential there is for themselves if they wish to as the grow into the club.
The 30 min break allows us to finish the 1st session and discuss what we've learnt and start the next session explaining what we aim to achieve that day.
The shorter hour session will allow us to give a more solid session keeping attention spans throughout.
We believe these changes will help the club coaches deliver sessions to a higher standard and help the children improve.
Road and off road sessions will alternate each week, Saturday 17th will be road and fortnightly there from and offroad will be fortnightly from 24th February.
A great day of racing for the Wheal Velocity XC racing crew!
The venue was the second round of the soggy bottom series.
Elwood and Mia represented us in the Under 8's, pedalling with great determination and both achieved a 3rd place in their categories.
The Under 10's/12 race next and Brody and Charlie came 2nd in their respective age categories after some nail biting battles for the podium places.
All of the kids were frozen after the race but really enjoyed it, the older ones loved the choice of the A/B line. (The A line is technically more challenging but often shorter)
Next up the adults then had a go, chairman Craig and all round legend Si [Editor, stop it your making me blush!] had a crack at the race and both said it was the hardest race they've done yet, but can't wait for the next lot of XC...
The next race is at the same venue in February, see the "Calendar" page for details. The first race of the South West League is in March at Grammarcombe Woods, Devon.
Wheal Velocity have 2 rounds of the South West League to host when it's warmer in June and August. Anyone that wants to join in with the racing or the helping please let us know!
As 2023 draws to a close, it gives me great pride to look back on another fabulous year for Wheal Velocity with plenty of highlights - too many for me to mention in one post but here are a few of my 2023 best bits
1. Hosting our first XC Mountain Bike race.
Although we are certainly an extremely experienced team when it comes to organising road & crit races, we have never had the experience and manpower to put on a MTB race before. With the additional challenges of course building and huge numbers racing, it is something that we have wanted to do for a long time and finally took the plunge this year.
Coach Cy had the vision early on and with the incredible support from our hosts The Wheal Jane Group, was able to get the ball rolling on our dream of a race course. Just as if it was written in the stars we then gained some incredible new members in Stu Harris and the kids. Stu has a very solid background in XC racing including being a regional series winner in his category and took up the challenge of course design and build along with Cy & I.
Several months of work on and off the course with Jeannie providing endless hours of expertise in race organisation on top of the build and we were finally able to hold an absolutely smashing event, with our best numbers post pandemic proving that our adventures into off road are definitely worth the efforts of the whole team and are an exciting development for the club. I was extremely proud to work with Jenny Bolsom on making this event a platform for supporting women’s mountain biking. It was wonderful to be part of breaking boundaries and making this side of the sport more accessible than ever. We look forward to continuing to support Jenny in her tireless work to promote and facilitate all cycling for women and girls.
My eternal thanks to Cy, Stu, Jeannie and all the amazing volunteers who made this possible. Especially to those young WV riders who have taken up the challenge of off road with awesome results!
2. The Carnon Classic incorporating the SW Youth Stage Racing Champs
Two titans of the Cornish cycling community Anthony Green of Kernow Racing Team and Jon Butt of Penzance Wheelers have for the last 3 years organised one of Cornwall’s premier road cycling events, the Carnon Classic along with an army of volunteers. An event that has raised lots of money for good causes over the years. This year we were invited to be part of the festival and to be a beneficiary of some of the money raised.
Once more with the amazing support of The Wheal Jane Group we were able to host Saturday Crit races that enabled the event to become Cornwall’s biggest and best stage race for all ages. The event was far too big to sum up here but needless to say, Jeannie once again stepped up to the mark and along with Anthony and Jon made the most incredible festival of road cycling in Cornwall since the Tour of Britain a reality. The Club had some awesome results with many of our riders dominating the youth categories and taking the wins!
Incredible thanks to Anthony, Jon and the Penzance Wheelers for the incredible support and contribution that this event made to youth cycling in Cornwall
3. The achievements of the WV Racing Team, made possible through our sponsors and supporters;
The Wheal Jane Group
Fibrefusion Ltd
Duchy Lettings
McDonald’s Farm
Wadebridge Cycles
MY Motors
Serious racing costs money along with blood, sweat and tears - that is not a secret. We exist as a club to get kids on bikes and those that want to, to the highest level competition they can achieve. The contributions of our supporters have enabled us to get riders to more and bigger events than ever before with some outstanding results coming from the whole team over the year.
Mark Claxton has once again put countless hours In behind the scenes and has managed the team to national level races, including the BC Youth Inter-regional Champs, Youth National Circuit races and plenty more. With the awesome coaching support of Tony Rowell, Jon Roodhouse and Mark Stacey the team is becoming a recognised player on the youth stage - I am incredibly proud of our young riders and their achievements. I look forward to seeing our new team riders at the 2024 presentation and offer my eternal gratitude to our sponsors and supporters who make this possible!
4. Adult members and national races!
We have always traditionally been a youth club with some adult members riding TT and socially, however this year took the decision to promote a fully inclusive, adult membership. I have been proud to see the WV Jersey on the back of some great men & women this year both on the road and in the mud. One crit race saw 8 adult WV jerseys on the start line - a record for us!
The crowning achievement for our adult racers this year has to be Simon Dodd, who joined us from our awesome sponsor Fibrefusion this year. Simon became the first adult male WV racer to compete in a national cyclocross race this year, absolutely smashing it out of the park with a top ten result in the ultra competitive V40 category. Simon has been a huge inspiration and supporter of the club including the adult section this year and I am very grateful for his hard work!
These are a few of my favourite moments of the year, however there are so many more wonderful moments and incredible people I could list and thank! Take it from me - if you have contributed anything at any point this year, I along with the rest of the club am extremely grateful. Please know that your contribution makes youth cycling possible in our county and that is the greatest gift!
A special thanks must go to the Wheal Jane Group. Without the awesome support of our hosts at Wheal Jane, none of this would be possible at all. It gives me great hope for the future to know that a business is willing to put themselves at the very heart of a community by providing facilities and support for young people to engage with sport! Wheal Jane is a special place and The Wheal Jane Group is run by some very special people! Thank you
Lastly to our youth riders, you are the reason and inspiration for everything we do! Your hard work and dedication makes it all worth while - I can’t wait to see you all next year.
Thanks for a great 2023 and here’s to a Happy New Year
The final. For many its been a long month of bike cleaning and trips up the A30. Exeter Wheelers put on a cracking race at Escot which was well attended by our club. Being the last race gave a little more gravitas to proceedings but our youth rides fully enjoyed the experience and produced great results. The call was "more next year please" as we now move into MTB XC session.
